I was just looking at the print edition of that other East Coast Times newspaper this morning. Throughout the first section of the Big Apple’s big paper, there are photo captions galore, variously and meticulously identifying the subjects: high school students in Lamongan, Indonesia; a line of job hopefuls at the Boothville-Venice School in Boothville, La.; Nikoi, a ‘tiny island resort’ about 50 miles from Singapore. If they can identify a photo of a ‘tiny island resort,’ why is it, then, that the paper’s four-column, front-page picture of the huge immigration rally in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday doesn’t have a word to say about where that picture was taken?

It’s clearly in Los Angeles. The throng is on Broadway, just a couple of blocks from the Los Angeles Times. On the left is the very legible sign for the fabled Bradbury building, which is a cherished national historic landmark. And across the street, yep, that’s Sid Grauman’s Million Dollar Theatre.

Clearly the photographer, David McNew of Reuters, knew where he was; another of his photos on Reuters’ website even names the street, Broadway. [The Los Angeles Times’ staff photographer Brian van der Brug’s front-page photo caption makes the time, place and event very clear.]

So New York couldn’t spare a couple of words -- even a couple of letters, like L.A.? -- to identify the site of that humongous demonstration? Was someone afraid that Gothamites might confuse our Broadway and their Broadway?

Instead, the print photo caption just reads, ‘Rallies for Immigration Bill: Demonstrators gathered for dozens of rallies across the country, hoping to pressure Congress to act on an immigration bill.’’

Yo, Big Apple: This resident of the Big Orange -- to use the coinage of my late colleague, Times columnist Jack Smith -- is sour on this dis.
