Immigrants are the key to California’s future, writes Peter Schrag in a Wednesday Op-Ed, and creating obstacles for undocumented immigrant students only hurts our state in the end.

It’s a different perspective, certainly, from those Californians who think we’re taxed out and can’t afford to subsidize people from other countries. Ted Rall obviously disagrees, leveraging his brand of sarcasm to riff on their points of view. (Click on the image above to see it at full size.)

So why does Schrag think investing in immigrants is the key to our future? Here’s an excerpt from his article:

Four years ago, USC demographer Dowell Myers predicted, in effect, that in the not-too-distant future Americans might be worrying less about too many illegal Mexican immigrants than about the education and training of those already here.Who, Myers asked in his book, ‘Immigrants and Boomers: Forging a New Social Contract for the Future of America,’ will fill the skilled jobs held by the millions of retiring baby boomers in the decades ahead? Who will be able to buy their homes?

Given Schrag’s argument, it only makes sense that Gov. Jerry Brown signed AB 130 on Monday, making it easier for undocumented immigrant students to attend California state colleges or universities. Now, let’s open up that door to opportunity even wider.
