Opinion: Politics: But saying ‘means-testing’ will vaporize you

Say what you like about New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie -- and some Democrats and union leaders would say he’s a big blowhard -- but in a speech this week, he delivered some refreshing remarks about reforming entitlements. Here’s the money quote (literally):

‘You’re gonna to have to raise the retirement age for Social Security. Oh ho. I just said it and I’m still standing here. I did not vaporize into the carpeting, and I said it.’

A further increase in the retirement age is on everyone’s list of (minor) repairs to Social Security. But leaders in both parties balk at giving voice to that truth. Christie deserves credit for doing so -- and for his colorful language.
