Opinion: BP oil spill: Not America’s worst environmental disaster after all?

Maybe the BP oil spill wasn’t as catastrophic as we initially thought, but that’s because we got lucky with unexpected (and starving) oil-eating bacteria unique to the Gulf of Mexico. We wouldn’t have been so fortunate had there been an oil spill elsewhere, such as the Beaufort Sea north of Alaska, where Shell Oil would like to start drilling. That’s why new oil regulations are a must, argues the board in the editorial ‘The final BP cleanup.’ But getting new regulations may be harder to achieve than cleaning up the gulf. Here’s why.
