Times editor-at-large and editorial board member Jim Newton recently joined the folks at UCLA, where he is also a senior fellow at the School of Public Affairs, to analyze the midterm elections.

On Jerry Brown versus Meg Whitman: ‘Each of them vows to change the way Sacramento runs now.... For me the big question [with Brown] is, ‘Does he have the incentive to change it; does he really want to change it?’ And with Whitman the question is, ‘Does she have the capacity to change it? ... What does she bring to the table that Schwarzenegger didn’t?’ ‘

On Proposition 19: ‘If the supporters of legalizing marijuana in California had written a more straightforward attempt to legalize it, they probably would find a broader base of support.’
