Poll: Was the L.A. City Council right to pass a boycott of Arizona?

City Hall did it:

The Los Angeles City Council, protesting Arizona's tough crackdown on illegal immigration, voted Wednesday to ban most city travel to Arizona and future contracts with companies in that state.

Boycott Council members argued that a new Arizona law, which will make it a state crime to lack immigration papers and requires police to determine whether people they stop are in the country illegally, would lead to racial profiling and discrimination. The law takes effect July 23. ...

The council also called on the city attorney's office to review all of the city's $58 million in existing contracts with Arizona companies to determine which can be canceled.

The resolution, which now heads to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, would still allow city officials to travel to Arizona under "special circumstances" that are in the city's interests. Also, existing contracts with Arizona firms would be exempt from the ban if canceling them would lead to "significant additional cost" to the city.

I can think of one contract the city won't be able cancel, let alone modify because of the boycott: service by Arizona-based airlines US Airways and Mesa Air at LAX. Federal regulations prohibit public airports from unjustly discriminating against different carriers; telling US Airways it can no longer serve LAX because of an ideological disagreement between Los Angeles and Arizona probably wouldn't fly with the feds. Then there's the issue of whether the boycott is even constitutional at all.

The Times' editorial board may weigh in on the boycott in the next few days; for now, share your thoughts by taking our poll, posting a comment or doing both.

I dont live in Los Angeles, and Im glad I dont. But Janice Hahn is running for Lt. Gov. pretty soon and I hope that the voting public will remember this and also the stand that San Francisco mayor Gavin is taking against Arizona. Dont vote for either one of the out of touch polititions.

NEWS FLASH.......May 13 2010

The States of Arizona, Nevada and Oregan have begun construction of a 30' high fence along the California Border.

break

Arizona and Nevada will shut-off the millions of dollars of electrical energy and fresh water currently sold to LA.

stop...

Geena Rodriguez

Recall the Los Angeles City Council. Recall Tony Villar.

Mark Andrew

Not only will I now boycott LA but I am cancelling my Times subscription due to your longstanding record of biased reporting.

Ricardo

Hey idiots! You better start boycotting the Federal Government then, too. Same exact wording.

Stupid fools.

Henry

I, along with a few friends, usually spend a weekend in LA every month. Its not much, but I am reducing it to zero. The city of LA and its businesses will no longer get a cent from me. Have fun with the ~$500 million deficit.

bober

Arizona sells California 20% of its electricity. Would Arizona please boycott California and shut off the power. LOL, that would be so great, then the illegals could rape LA like they did in 93 during the riots. hahahahaha

John Leyman

I find it amusing that the LA City Council has nothing better to do than to discuss national issues in which the City nor any of the Council members have a vested interest. Perhaps if the City was sitting on a budget SURPLUS of $500 million dollars I might think differently.

After hearing about this non-stop for the last few days, I hope for the following two things: first, that the voters of Los Angeles remember this come election day (and "clean house," as the old saying goes), and second, that the hard-working people of Arizona send a message back to Los Angeles and stage their own boycott.

Karen Pederson

We need a law just like that here in California. I'll vote 'YES' for it. I'm going to support Arizona by looking for products that come from that state to purchase. Shame on the LA politicians, especially Villa - what's his name! A man that can't even pass the bar exam after how many attempts.

Art Maeda

Los Angeles used to be one of the finest cities in the world. I feel like Im living in Mexico now. City council are idiots, we have an idiot mayor and governor. Evrry time I pick up the phone and make a call I hear press 1 for mexican and press 2 for english. I am so glad to moving out of the sewer and off to St Louis where you on hear english and not mexican. Why spend a vacation in mexico where you will be killed. Stay in Los Angeles you can see all the mexicans you want.

Jean B.

I AM BUYCOTTING Los Angeles!! Every cent that I spend on the weekend will be spent outsite of the city limits. I will also be sending the Govenor of Arizona A bouquet of Roses from an ARIZONA LOCAL FLORIST. I hate the city council. My Rep Tom Labonge is completely invisible, but yet he has time to boycott Arizona. Ive live here for over 20 years. This city has gotten worse as we tax payers fight for better. California and Los Angeles has finally met its Waterloo and we all have front row seats.

Mark Brodersen

No wonder LA is broke...

John Rizzo

PC correct morons lead by the chief moron Hahn.
I have ordered all my employees to buy all our biz needs from any location beside the city of LA. I have also rescinded my yearly donation to the Los Angeles Maritime museum which is 4 digits this year.
Please join us in the boycott of the city of LA and help save this great state and country.
VIVA ARIZONA!!!

Richard

You have convinced myself and my corporate business to boycott Los Angeles.

Barbara Mishica

If the LA Times had any guts, they would print the truth - that the LA Council folks who voted for a boycott of Arizona are liars. They are all speaking lies about the bill, which makes it apparent that they either have not read it, or have special interest groups to appease. Either one of those choices is despicable. Also, LA is in such a shambles - who are they to be criticizing Arizona? This vote to boycott Arizona just exposes those on the LA City Council as the idiots they are . . . get them out, people of Los Angeles. Take your city back!!

Casey Taylor

"Frankly, I don't know what it is about California, but we seem to have a strange urge to elect really obnoxious ultra-liberal women to high office. I'm not bragging, you understand, but no other state, including Maine, even comes close. When it comes to sending left-wing dingbats to Washington, we're absolute number one. There's no getting around the fact that the last time anyone saw the likes of Barbara Boxer, Dianne Feinstein, and Nancy Pelosi, they were stirring a cauldron when the curtain went up on 'Macbeth'. The three of them are like jackasses who happen to possess the gift of blab. You don't know if you should condemn them for their stupidity or simply marvel at their ability to form words.”
Because of there liberal actions and belief, we have consequences here in Los Angeles
1. 40% of all workers in L. A. County ( L. A. County has 10.2 million people) are working for cash and not paying taxes.
This is because they are predominantly illegal immigrants working without a green card.

2. 95% of warrants for murder in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens.

3.. 75% of people on the most wanted list in Los Angeles are illegal aliens.

4. Over 2/3 of all births in Los Angeles County are to illegal alien Mexicans on Medi-Cal, whose births were paid for by CA. taxpayers.

5. Nearly 35% of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican nationals here illegally.

6. Over 300,000 illegal aliens in Los Angeles County are living in garages.

7 The FBI reports half of all gang members in Los Angeles are most likely illegal aliens from south of the border.

8 Nearly 60% of all occupants of HUD properties are illegal.

9. 21 radio stations in L. A. are Spanish speaking.

10. In L.. A. County 5.1 million people speak English, 3.9 million speak Spanish.. (There are 10.2 million people in L. A. County )

Less than 2% of illegal aliens are picking our crops, but 29% are illegal on welfare. Over 70% of the United States ' annual population growth(and over 90% of California , Florida , and New York ) results from immigration. 29% of inmates in federal prisons are illegal aliens .

Support Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act (known before its enactment as Arizona Senate Bill 1070).

Boycott California! Turn off the water from AZ to CA!!!! Tax the hell out of the pipeline bringing gas to CA from AZ!!!! Turn off the electricity imported from CA!!!! Replace your idiot California State Representatives and all of Los Angeles City Council!!!!
We are absolute fools, for letting this ultra-liberal Obama style madness to continue.

nick lee

I'm boycotting L.A. you go Arizona I support you all the way!

Kathy Browning

We were planning a fairly large family reunion (over 75 people) in so cal this summer. Collectively, we have agreed to move it to the Scottsdale area. We have decided to stay a couple of extra days and look for a retirement home. Our plans had been to stay somewhere in California, not now. Lakers, I'll always love you, just not the overburdened overtaxed state that I refuse to continue to bail out.

Mark Ward

Not only is it a STUPID boycott (and Los Angeles may, themselves, TRUELY break the law when they try to cancel many of the contracts with Arizona companies), but we have a way to get back at the MORONS in the L.A. City Council...

California's new law (SB 183) - REQUIRING EVERY home owner in California to install a Carbon Monoxide (CO) detector - provides us with the PERFECT opportunity to conduct our own BUYcott...

I'm looking to purchase MY CO detector from an ARIZONA company (I don't know which, yet, but I will DEFINATELY NOT purchase it from a California company [at least not one from Los Angeles or San Francisco]).

I join those who will be BOYCOTTING Los Angeles and San Francisco (and any other city whose elected morons feel that supporting CRIMINALS is more important than enforcing EXISTING Federal Immigration Laws)!

Just as SOME people actually read the nutritional information crap on the sides of items before they make a purchasing decision - I will be researching the COMPANIES from which I make purchases (in person and on-line) - and, when I have a choice, I will be buying from the ARIZONA company...

Hey California companies (if there are any left)... If you don't like OUR ARIZONA BUYcott - perhaps YOU should let the morons in Los Angeles and San Francisco know what it's doing (and will likely do) to YOUR business!

Then again, you can always move your company to Arizona (or Texas) - like so many other companies are doing!

Steve, Chino Hills

Who will the world turn to when America becomes just like the rest of the world? Support our sister state in her fight against the willful, disruptive, and illegal intrusion into their state.

Stevie Sims

L.A. is just too afraid to take a stand against illegal immigration. The Hispanic community has too much power. We should not be pandering to people breaking our laws. They steal ID's and work with stolen SS cards. It is criminal behavior and to call it any less is ridiculous. We are boycotting L.A.

David

Locally boycott L.A. - buying my gas and shopping in Agoura hills, Thousand Oaks, Glendale, Culver City, Beverly Hills etc..STOP BUYING CALIFORNIA WINE!!!!!!! Go0d wines from Australia, Argentina etc....

Dave Crowder

First remark: Why do Liberals such as those on the City Councilhave to invoke Nazi Germany and Hitler over "Conservative" actions? First off, READ the DARN LAW!! Then read the Federal statuates about immigration and illegals. Then look at where the 'Great State of California" is at. Then remember that this IS the U.S.A. and not Estados Unidos Mexicanos.
Every time that politicians and/or bodies of politicians jump into freys in this manner, it only serves to embolden law breaking and further erode our sovereinty, security and National identity. I don't know if MS Hahn, etal want us to turn into another Mexico, as that is exactly what will happen if we do not secure the boders AND ports to stemp the illegal flow of everything
God Bless and Protect America from itself.

John

I have a suggestion for the Mayor & city council, READ THE BILL!!!!
Here's a link to the bill:
http://www.azleg.gov/legtext/49leg/2r/bills/sb1070s.pdf

Jerry

Schwarzenegger ezpected to eliminate health programs Now who's killing your grandmother?
Now he's acting like a real worthless Republican!

Carol

We need to support Arizona in every way we can. The bill does not racial profile. They are only enforcing the law. We need to protect our citizens and the non-citizens as well from the overwhelming violence that is rampant in Arizona. Why don't you do more stories on the kidnappings, drug runners, murders, property damage, and other violent acts. How is it that so many of our elected officials are turning a blind eye to the laws of our nation and getting away with it. ?

Mark S.

The City of Los Angeles has no business in what Arizona does. The State of Arizona has every right to enforce and enact laws as they deem fit. Let's not forget, it is a crime to be in the United States illegally. What's the difference if an Arizona law enforcement officer arrests an illegal immigrant versus a federally paid immigration agent. The LA city council decided that American citizens should be financially burdened and illegal immigrants should be rewarded. The council is a bunch of idiots doing nothing more than trying to play politics on a national level. They should focus on fixing Los Angeles and improving the quality of life for the citizens of Los Angeles and Los Angeles only. Geez, what a bunch of idiots. Shame on the council.

Ricardo

Hey Mayor Moron! Hey City Council idiots! READ THE DAMN BILL!! 98% of us on here did....and found out how STUPID you mental midgets really are! Where did you get your information about the AZ law....from Attorney General Holder!???? OOOPPS......he didn't read the damn bill either!!

It's ten frickin pages. Take a few minutes to educate your stupid selves.

Emil

I can't believe the complete disregard for the laws in our country - the LA city council is enclosed in a ridiculous myopic bubble. This country has very fair and reasonable laws to allow immigration, all Arizona is doing is trying to obey them. These laws were established to protect the citizens of the US and guarantee that tax dollars are brought back to the communities that generated them. When these laws are completely disregarded as they are in California then we end spending billions of dollars funding welfare, education, and prisons to manage the illegal immigrants. The streets become more dangerous, the schools plummet in quality, the hospitals grind to a halt managing non-emergencies in the ERs, and there is no tax money for infrastructure repair. I am ashamed of the city councils behaviour and will do all I can to bring tourism dollars to Arizona. I was planning a vacation to Pacific Grove, now we are going to drive east.

Jose Luis

How outrageous!

Many more Latinos are planning to get to Phoenix in by bus to protest against the Arizona SB 1070 anti illegal immigration law. As Americans, we need to show great support to Arizonians.

I encourage you to bear an Arizona Flag on our cars and houses in support.

Si Greenberg

I cannot believe the ignorance exhibited by the LA City Council. To think that enforcing the laws of the United States of America and protecting our borders is somehow racist, just shows how out of control the whole political correctness movement is. As a Jewish American, I'm horrified by the comment comparing Arizona to the Nazis.

I am seriously considering moving my family and our small business (well not really that small) to Arizona. I want to stop paying taxes in this intolerant state.

Mark Polhill

The real vote should have been no because it was a good law that only mirrors the Federal laws. There is no racial profiling and the police can only ask about being here legally if they already have contact with them. If the Federal Government won't protect the border then the state has to.

Jose Luis

Dear President Barack Obama and Honorable members of Congress:
As a citizen/legal permanent resident of the United States of America, I would like to urge NOT to support the passage of the outrageous and unneeded so called, fair and just comprehensive immigration reform bill. We are living during a critical time when the decision that our leaders made take today, will have a significant impact and ramifications for the direction of our great nation heads in the future.
Strict enforcement of the numerous existing immigration and border protection laws is what needs to address the current and future challenges our country faces and will continue to face in its future.
The U.S. Government must send a strong message to the world that we are a nation of laws and that the fundamental rights upon which this great nation was built: “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness”, belongs to those who respect and adhere to our laws.
Our borders should be completely closed and secured first before considering any debate of any immigration reform. The U.S. should prevent another influx of millions of illegal aliens motivated by another Immigration Reform/Amnesty Law just like the one of 1986 did.
As a citizen/legal permanent resident of the United States of America, I appreciate your attention to these concepts that I hold dear.
Sincerely, Jose Luis

Christobal

I support Arizona's new bill, 1070, which is a mirror of the existing federal law. If the AZ law is wrong then why hasn't someone addressed the federal law from which it was modeled? No one is complaining about the active current enforcement of federal immigration laws on people from every country except Mexico. (Asia, Africa, S. America, Cuba, etc.) And why aren't people boycotting all the other countries on planet earth that have strict immigration laws (Europe, China, Russia, South America, Mexico, all of them!). Okay last comment ... I hear complaints but not one attempt to recommend an alternative solution. It seems to me the race card is being used to shut people up and keep the broken system in place .... why isn't someone asking why?

Liz

Who are our reps. working for? Do they represent us citizens? They should run for office in Mexico. They just sit in OUR offices looking for new ways to fleece us! They are for themselves and do not speak for me! Try to work for us? just once? I am so sick of them! Media that gives bias news (they shove it down our throat!) and can't do a decent job. Fed. Gov. who want to tax us to death so they can give it away! (and have POWER) I care about the safety of the AZ citizens, they deserve to be safe! Arizona Sun's? They can start giving away their game tickets and open up their games to anyone who wants to just walk in and take a seat. They have no problem with the state of Arizona running in the red and being asked to pick up the tabs for walk-in's. Lets see how long they could bare the financial burdens and risks before they start crying uncle. GAME OVER!!!

Keep up the good work Governor Jan Brewer. The good citizens of Arizona deserve nothing less. Its time that their tax dollars's work for them, not the Federal Government

Dave Crowder

Second post on this: My wife is a LEGAL immigrant from Venezuela, here for 6 1/2 years. In that time, she has learned English, passed her TOEFL and is set to prepare for the bar exam here in Texas. She wants to focus on immigration law- And not the defending of illegals nor any other type of lawbreaker. I was born in bakersfield and raised in L.A. and am not proud any more to claim to being a Californian between the Bay area and the L.A. area, who needs a foreign enemy. Oh, and we were planning a Ca. trip this fall to both eh L.A. area and drive up 101 to S.F. but, not now. We will probably do a New England trip instead, but definently no Ca in the near future. Pelosi, Boxer,Feinstein, L.A, S.F what a grand state

DaMav

I can see that things have changed a great deal since I used to live in LA. Apparently the city is now clean, prosperous, healthy, and nearing utopian status. Otherwise why would the City Council decide that it ought to be running Arizona as well?

Jay

We need to stop illegal immigration for at least three major reasons:

1. Personal safety. If violent criminals are coming into the country we need to know and stop them before they get here. Even if only 1/10 of 1 percent is a violent criminal that would make 12,000 violent illegal immigrants in the U.S. As we have seen personally, it only takes a handful to kill thousands. And at 40,000 dollars per inmate that is a cost of 480 million a year, if we were jail all 12,000. How many teachers is that???
2. Illness. All immigrants have to ensure they are not bringing in serious illness into this country. First, to stop the spread to others within the U.S. and two to prevent them from getting the free health care at the ER. Their native country should support them, not our tax dollars.
3. Jobs. Illegal immigration lowers the wages for all jobs up to the threshold of jobs that require college education. (Nearly all Illegals don’t have a college education… I think it is safe to say more are violent criminals) College education is a level cutter and if you increase the labor population below the level cutter and do not increase the jobs at the same rate… simple supply and demand kicks in. Who will do it for less. We all know who that is… Illegal immigrates

Michael Monks

It is ridiculous for the City to boycott Arizona, the law only restates what the law of the United States already has in place. It is illegal to be unlawfully in Arizona. Which is what the US law states. Why would the City have a problem with that??? I wish California would adopt the same law.

Big T

I am boycotting the City of L.A. No more money spend at restaurants, amusement, entertainment, nothing. L.A. Can't take care of itself, let alone a state that has nothing to do with us. I will personally look for items sold in Arizona, so they can get the revenue.

Ken

My son was stopped the other night just because he was in a car full of white teenagers driving at 2am. My son is white too. They weren't breaking any laws. The cop questioned them, asked for ID's (papers :-) ), made sure they weren't drinking and let them go. So should I be outraged? I live in Orange County CA. Police usually know what is suspicious and what isn't. You liberals, especially the white liberals always feel the need to find a cause to get behind. You're so predictable. Last thing. Mexicans will be the majority in this country in a few years. What will you Liberal's say then?? The white "minority's" racial profiling against the brown "majority" ;-) LOL

Liz

I ABSOLUTELY 100% BELIEVE THE CITY COUNCIL AND CA GOVERNMENT IS INCAPABLE OF REPRESENTING US! THEY CAN’T BALANCE A RESPONSIBLE BUDGET AND ARE OBSESSED WITH KEEPING THE AZ CITIZENS IN DANGER! WHY DON’T THEY SPEAK ABOUT THE CRIME ON AND DEBT IMPOSED ON AZ? THEY SHOULD FOLLOW AZ, INSTEAD BY THIS BOYCOTT THEY PUT OUT A WELCOME MAT! THEY SHOULD BE EMBARRASED! NOTHING BUT LIES AND IRRESPONSIBILITY! HEY CA GOV. WE CAN’T AFFORD THEM EITHER. DO YOUR JOB!

Pissed Patriot

The results are telling 10,000 no, 275 yes.

Can you hear us now?

SadCalifornian

Hey! You guys cannot blame the Council. The majority of the people in their city are Mexicans, of course, they have to kiss ass to those people.

Christobal

I am boycotting LA because of their decision to boycott AZ.
I would guess that each year I spend over a thousand dollars just on entertainment in LA. From now on I will not even buy gasoline from LA gas stations. I would consider canceling my boycott if the city council apologize for making such an irresponsible decision to boycott AZ without even reading the bill (they could have Google'd it, AZ SB 1710). No wonder LA is failing financially... the people running the city government act without thinking.

James

Maybe you idiots in LA and the ENTIRE state of California should adopt a similar law as Arizona. Are you capable of putting 2 and 2 together and see that most of your financial problems are caused by ILLEGALS?

Arizona should love the fact that they pissed you off- not wanting to be like you brain dead idiots is a sign of sanity. Have fun rotting in your liberal, septic pit.

$EcleticJohn

Perhaps all Americans who agee with Arizona, roughly 70%, should boycott milk from "Happy cows from California". Perhaps all of us should visit Disney ONLY in Florida. Perhaps we should all boycott California produce.

Alas, that would be wrong. Those in California trying to hurt Arizona don't get it. They are trying to escalate a political war into an economic war between states. If they succeed, California will lose. If folks in California wish to change Arizona policies, move to Arizona, and register to vote. That is the American way!

This is a comment from another poster, but it's so important, it bears quoting, over and over again. It may already be among the comments I haven't read here, but it bears repeating anyway. ~>

"Janice Hahn evoked Cesar Chavez's name in taking this stand against Arizona's SB 1070 - She tried to say that the City Council was being like him in boycotting Arizona. I am so embarrassed by these people who represent our City of Los Angeles. Their ignorance shines every time they open their mouths to make yet another statement about illegal immigrants.

FACT: Cesar Chavez was a 3rd generation American citizen, born in Yuma, Arizona. In his prime, Chavez fought constantly against illegal immigration. They took jobs away from legal California immigrant farm workers, and Chavez and the United Farm Workers Union he headed, routinely reported, to the INS, for deportation, suspected illegal immigrants.

Next time you evoke someone's name for your cause, Janice, maybe you should do a little research first. Cesar Chavez would support the Arizona law!

I was born in Los Angeles and I lived there for 40 years. I thought I knew the city well enough to believe they would never do anything THIS dumb. But alas, the city I knew has really done it this time. I no longer live in Los Angeles. Why? One of the reasons I moved away five years ago was because I knew the city was falling into bankruptcy --one of the reasons being because of all the entitlements that are being given to illegal aliens at the expense of the taxpayers. All four of my grandparents are from Mexico. They all came here LEGALLY and I am not against immigration. But my grandparents took great pains to become citizens and they were indeed very proud of that fact. They lived here during the Great Depression, WWII and through many hard times, all doing their part for this country. They taught their children to be good and productive Americans too. Somehow I doubt that they left Mexico and came to this country just so they could see their grandhildren and great-grandchildren become Mexican citizens all over again. If you're descended from immigrants, remember why you're here, remember why you're forefathers came here. If they'd wanted to stay in the "old country", they would have!

Anna

How outrageous! Many more Latinos are planning to get to Phoenix in by bus to protest against the Arizona SB 1070 anti illegal immigration law. As Americans, we need to show great support to Arizonians. I encourage you to bear an Arizona Flag on our cars and houses in support.

In1986, many illegal aliens submitted fake documentation to proof that hey were in the country illegally and before the year of 1982 so, they could qualified for a green card under the Amnesty Law. Many others got their green card through what the Latino community called, Late Amnesty, a lawsuit sponsored by the Catholic Church and Charities. Others more, bought documents that “prove” they were farm workers to make then qualify for. So, as you see, another immigration reform law would bring more of the same old thing and the illegal immigration would never end.

If the Democrat oligarchy in the U.S. Congress passes another Amnesty Law, those illegal aliens becoming lawful residents will bring their immediate family and, by 2020, we would have more than 50 million of people demanding free healthcare and other services.
I do not support another immigration reform law. I do support the enforcement of the current laws in the books. I support the E-Verify system.

Anna from Baldwin Park, California.
