Poll: Was the L.A. City Council right to pass a boycott of Arizona?

City Hall did it:

The Los Angeles City Council, protesting Arizona's tough crackdown on illegal immigration, voted Wednesday to ban most city travel to Arizona and future contracts with companies in that state.

Boycott Council members argued that a new Arizona law, which will make it a state crime to lack immigration papers and requires police to determine whether people they stop are in the country illegally, would lead to racial profiling and discrimination. The law takes effect July 23. ...

The council also called on the city attorney's office to review all of the city's $58 million in existing contracts with Arizona companies to determine which can be canceled.

The resolution, which now heads to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, would still allow city officials to travel to Arizona under "special circumstances" that are in the city's interests. Also, existing contracts with Arizona firms would be exempt from the ban if canceling them would lead to "significant additional cost" to the city.

I can think of one contract the city won't be able cancel, let alone modify because of the boycott: service by Arizona-based airlines US Airways and Mesa Air at LAX. Federal regulations prohibit public airports from unjustly discriminating against different carriers; telling US Airways it can no longer serve LAX because of an ideological disagreement between Los Angeles and Arizona probably wouldn't fly with the feds. Then there's the issue of whether the boycott is even constitutional at all.

The Times' editorial board may weigh in on the boycott in the next few days; for now, share your thoughts by taking our poll, posting a comment or doing both.

Did anyone of these people even read the bill passed in AZ? People (thanks CNN for that) are jumping to conclusions and don't know the facts. I will no longer shop in LA county I will only shop in Orange or Ventura from now on. I was going to go to Vegas a few times over the summer but now I am going to go and visit friends in AZ a few times and spend my money there where the state protects its citizens!

MEW

I fully support and commend Arizonas illegal immigration law, and their backbone to stand up to this tyrannical government in DC.

I for one think the LACC is a bunch of morons and some of their members should have their legal status examined and maybe deported. Boycotting another state. What a joke.

Another round of, "They got ocean front property in Arizona". Arizona will be around long after LA breaks off and sinks into the ocean. HA HA

Elli England

As if California doesn't have enough to worry about in our current economic state, the City of LA just gave other states (and even it's own citizens) more reason to take their business elsewhere. Way to go City Council!

Your lack of competence and forethought is a huge disappointment to the entire state.

BC

What a bunch of flaming political opportunists. This Taco Bell city council misread their electorate. The Hahn family is now 'City Council' history.

New AZ law is Fed law ... enforced! The mandate is for ILLEGAL immigrants after one may be stopped for 'due cause'. Idiots! Get Real.

Rachel

I am ashamed to live in this State and to have the horrible politicians that we have. You all should be ashamed of yourselves if anything we should boycott our own government for not stopping this problem we need a law like this one. I want my health care, my dental paid, free housing but no I have to be an illegal alien just to get that. It is a bunch of crap. If you knew the real things that were going to happen then your idiotic boycott would be null and void. I am calling you out LA I want my constitutional rights to be in check and I am sending Arizona all my business you bunch of idiots.

Will Rogers

Mexico's own laws are FAR less sever and invasive then ANYTHING Arizona is doing. Does anyone bother to check what Mexico does with illegal immigrants?

Of course not. The real racists here are the people that are making this about race. There is nothing racist about it. We have a border problem. I live in Los Angeles and I only wish California had the courage and moral clarity to do what Arizona has done.

When I listen to the preening nitwits in city hall and the capital... I feel only shame.

Suzanne

I too will be boycotting Los Angeles. My husband who works in LA will no longer go out to lunch in LA. He will eat and buy lunch in another city.

Great job. LA city council. You really know what is important

PS: Oh, Ms. Hahn, if Arizona is the new Nazi Germany, why do you allow the Dodgers to play in Arizona and the Arizona team to play in LA? Would Roosevelt have allowed a Hitler youth sports team anywhere near the US borders? And Mr. Reyes - a passport for Arizona? Could you sound more ignorant? (Probably not).

Dave

Thanks for the boycott. Fewer jobs will mean fewer illegals. Also, LA County employee travel restrictions make sense during tough budget times anyway. It's a win-win situation!

bernieb

This vote is a smokescreen to distract citizens from the total incompetence of this council in managing city finances, to give the impression that these clowns are actually important and accomplished, which based on their track record is far from the truth.

Raul Ramirez US Citizen!

Citizens of Los Angeles. Join a militia, buy guns, ammo, gear, and train! Prepare for whom ever decides to violate you and yours.

A lot of condemnation has occurred the last couple of months: against banks, against the rich, against CEO’s of corporations, against Wall Street, against doctors, against insurance companies, against pharmaceutical companies, against free speech, against America’s exceptionalism, against capitalism, against support of traditional marriage, against religious faith in the public square, against opposition to Obamacare and bailouts, against the tea parties calling them racists, against Fox news, against conservatives, against oil companies, against our allies – especially Israel, against talk radio, against anyone who disagrees with the White House, and now against those who support Arizona’s new illegal immigration law which actually mirrors the federal law. Does anyone want to guess who is deliberately fomenting this dissension? Silly me, and I thought Obama was going to be the great unifier.

“Never let a crisis go to waste” Ron Emanuel.

linda

vote los angeles city councilman(janice hahn, ed reyes, etc) out of office for boycotting arizona

Madas Hell

The council members who voted for this boycott are an embarassment to the city. Trying to distract citizens from your inability to solve the problems you need to address here at home is lame.

We elected you pay attention to the city's needs, not use your government office to voice your personal opinions and meddle in the affairs of other States.

If Arizona is so important to you, resign and devote your time and your money to overturn the law.

Just as I thought, not that important!!!

Elba R. Los Angeles

I am a Latino U.S. Citizen and despite the fact that I had sent several e-mails to the U.S. Senators Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein opposing to another fiasco of Immigration reform, they continue to favor another Amnesty Law. What it worries me these days, is that the controlled Congress by the Democrats will enact another unpopular Amnesty Law.
I urge all voters in the State of California to continue sending e-mails, faxes and letters to these two people and warn them that if they support an Immigration Reform/Amnesty Law, they will be oust from office this November. Thanks, Elba Ramirez.

todd

No one wants to live in or near a community where there is a lot of crime or where people are breaking laws. The Arizona law is perfectly fine and just!!

Hispanics [and the Los Angeles City Council] are selfish and the only ones complaining about the Arizona law!!!

Hispanics should be ASHAMED of themselves for entering a country illegally, making fake IDs, stealing jobs from Americans, putting non-US citizen children in school for someone else to pay the bill, and breaking who knows how many other laws. then to add insult to injury they march in the streets and demand rights.

Muslim Middle Eastern Men are responsible for over 90% of terrorist attacks against the US including flying planes into New York City high rises, the New York City Times Square attempted bombing [even though the media was desperate to blame a white male], and the list goes on.

Should we start looking at Catholics, Hispanics, or Asians so that Middle Eastern men don’t get their feeling hurt? Or better yet, let us include old Asian Ladies so it not ethnic profiling or gender profiling!!

Men are responsible for most of the general crime and rapes against women. Should we stop profiling men when a rape is reported and start looking at men and women, so it is not sexism or gender profiling?

Hispanics should be profiled because they are at the center of the problem and are the ones that are breaking the law the most.

Stop breaking the laws and you won’t get profiled!!!!

By the way, SHAME on councilwoman Hahn for getting on national TV and painting a picture that Los Angeles does not have a problem with illegals.

Have you seen the vast amount of graffiti all over this city? Yes, everyone knows it is the Hispanics responsible for the vast majority of the graffiti.

neel

Pathetic LA city council. They cannot balance their budget and fix all their own problems but have time to boycott Arizona. What kind of drugs do these people take? There is no country in the world that allow people to enter, work and live in their country without proper immigration status. Incredible PATHETIC.

Eric

I was going to buy tickets to the upcoming Roger Waters "The Wall" show in the LA area. Saw that it is playing in Phoenix as well. Going to Phoenix instead baby. Wouldn't spend a dime in LA. I hope LA goes bankrupt.

Paul Wanamaker

The council's actions are horrendous. Since when has any city boycotted another state for political purposes!! What a disgrace!

Its time to take our city and state back! Its time for the rule of law!

1 - Every one of the council members that voted for this should be removed either by recall or in next election.
2 - We should pass a constitutional amendment with real teeth, perhaps even stronger than Arizona's perfectly legal and constitutional law so that no city can afford to be a sanctuary city, and every law enforcement organization must be on board with enforcing the law to the fullest possible extent.
3- It should be a crime punishable by prison and fines for any city/county official to even vote for a law or make a rule which causes any local law enforcement official to violate state law or the state constitution or not enforce a state law.
4- We should have a constitutional amendment like the new Arizona law to ban teaching of the ethnic studies classes that cause so much division and harm. Diversity for the sake of diversity is chaos. These classes breed hatred for others in the students.
5- And we should vote out every damn democrat that has run this state into ruin.
6 - The Republican party had better step up and really do the honest and right thing - we're voting for folks that do, regardless of party now! You better have no more dishonest back room deals. Read the US constitution and founding fathers if you don't have a clue. Stand up for the rights of your constituents. Keep the government small so the citizens are not burdened to the greatest possible extent.

And NO the Arizona law is not racist, it mirrors Federal law, and can be enforced quite fairly. If someone is arrested or stopped for a crime, check their status, whats wrong with that! Mexican immigration laws are much tougher!

I think most Americans are getting terribly tired with the racist demagogues who hurl slurs against the law abiding and law enforcement. Its more than enough already! The decent people of America do not have to take it!

Elba R. Los Angeles

On Friday 14, 2010 at 10:00 P.M., the Spanish Television Network, UNIVISION/Chanel-34 will host an Immigration debate in the Spanish Language and they will be open to comments via Internet, let them hear us and said we DO NOT support another Immigration Reform/Amnesty Law/Dream Act. We SUPPORT the Arizona SB 1070 Law.

Linda

Good grief! Every time I turn on the news I hear about some stupid thing that the LA city council or the mayor or some other LA politician is doing! You have so much corruption in your own city and you go sticking your noses into the affairs of Arizona where, at least, their representatives actually care about the needs of their citizens! Oh, I am so going to boycott Los Angeles. You can believe it! I posted this article on Facebook and you can bet a lot of people are going to see it! Big mistake, LA.

Charles

My family is coming in a couple of weeks for my son's graduation from an L.A. area college. We originally were planning to stay an extra week to see the area and various attractions. However, we've all decided we don't want to stay in L.A. any longer than we have to and now are leaving for home right after the graduation ceremony.

Cyril Manthorpe

The law is Constitutional. It is a States issue. The Boycott is also a states issue and is therefor also is Constitutional by definition. Power to the states and to the people. Good for LA and good for Arizona to assert power over themselves. This is exactly what our founding fathers envisioned when they carefully and thoughtfully crafted the Constitution of the United States of America.
Power to the states to govern themselves was very important to the authors and signers of this wonderful document. The federal government isn't allowed by the Constitution to interfere in this matter at all. Of course they will...
too bad

nick

SO the LA City Council is in favor of open borders? Why don't they pass a law that no policeman can ask you for a driver's license during a traffic stop?

Is it possible to boycott the city of LA if you live there? I'd like to do that.

Elba R. Los Angeles

There is a guy named, Ruben Luengas from NBC/Telemundo Network Chanel 52 anchorman in Los Angeles who is an outspoken person against the Arizona Immigration Law and favors a Comprehensive Immigration Reform/Amnesty Law. He can be reach at encontexto@nbcuni.com.
Telemundo-52 is going to cover the commencement ceremony at the Pomona College this May 16, a protest and demonstration against the Arizona Law is expected. Minutemen are expected to be there as well. Let’s participate and yell out loud, NO Immigration Reform/NO Amnesty Law/NO Dream Act. YES to Arizona SB 1070.

Julie

YOU council members need to wake up. We The People are feed up with YOU doing nothing to stop the illegals from coming to our great state. God Bless the governor in AZ. She has something none of YOU have courage and a sense of what is right. It is time to start protecting this country and its citizens. If people want to come to the United States of America let them, but through the front door legally just as millions before them did. As citizens they can work and pay taxes just as the rest of us US citizens do. I am tired of paying their hospital bills and schooling for their children. I love America but what is happening to her??? I will spend as much time in AZ this summer as possible. One question – did you even read the AZ law that was signed?

Julie

John

Seriously? City employees cannot travel to Arizona? Right. They should build a 15ft high razor wire topped fence around LA anyone to keep the idiots out of free America.

Sarah

When will this government start to protect the rights of U.S. Citizens and our borders? After all that's suppose to be their job. Why can't they understand illegal means ILLEGAL? If citizens of this country do something illegal we pay the price, we don't get a free ride. However, U.S. taxpayers are footing the bill for illegal immigrants. We can't get the same benefits illegals get. They get free medical, free education, welfare assistance and the list goes on. And most pay NO taxes...a fact. It is time the U.S. government does it's job...... protect this country and the it's citizens, NOT illegal immigrants from other countries.

The L. A City Council has more important things to do than waste time and money on this vote. FIX Los Angeles!

david grant

Im headed to Arizona for no other reason but to buy an I love arizona t-shirt and drop a few dollars here and there while im in the greatest state of the U.S.A. ...... Anyone with me?

John C

Thank goodness for John and Ken. They tell it like it is. We need any tools we can use at our disposal to get rid of criminal, drug trafficking, gangbanging illegal aliens. Shame on the L.A. City Council siding with the criminal aliens. Go to KFIAM640.com to see their heads on sticks. God bless John and Ken, true American heroes.

Mark Smith

Not only is the action in Arizona legal, it is overdue. The bill passed is not a threat to those who obey the law. Why have laws, if they aren't going to be enforced?

What are people feeling so guilty about that they are against enforcing the law?

Jim

L.A. is a pathetic excuse for a city. It's a nice shiny example of what happens when you let non-white immigrants take over.

People, is there a country operated by colored people that isn't jacked up? No, there is not. So explain the logic in allowing these people to take over parts of the USA. It defies logic. You leftist liberal schmucks who had some half-***ed child-hood need to grow up and face the harsh grim facts of LIFE. American is and always has been WHITE. You cannot mix all these different cultures together and expect things to operate smoothly. These people are not integrating. Go open a history book and look what happens to nations that allow this type of fragmentation to occur.

Selective, limited immigration is fine. Bring in people who want to help OUR country grow. That's not what most of these Mexicans or Black people are doing. They want to TAKE OVER our country with THEIR culture. End of story.

You can accept these facts, or get conquered. And we are running out of time. But they should know, that if these minorities keep inching towards taking majority, we will enter an open war. Concentration camps, executions, deportation. It will happen. Want to go that route? Then keep it up.

Lenny Rolsen

Will the City of LA boycott the federal government (and all the money from the feds) if congress gets around to passing an immigration bill? Even if they granted a general amnesty, aren't they also supposed to put in tougher enforcement language as well to get it passed? Maybe Arizona is just ahead of the curve?

david

these people are idiots i cant believe i share the same city with them..

jack gruen

Ed Reyes is committing sedition because in fact the AZ law is a carbon copy of the federal law.

The sanctuary city idea carried out by ethnocentric usurpers is aiding a continental invasion by Latin America of The United States.

Latinos like Reyes have made illegal immigration a race issue.

Now it looks like we will have to fight a race war.

Legal immigrants will be the big losers. Too bad Mexicans have so much PRIDE.

rubin trujillo

Am I dreaming this or is our City Council truly this disgusting, drawing attention to Arizona's immigration issues while they fumble not - accomplishing anything - other than going back into our pockets time after time with their crooked schemes.
The City Council should be immediately fired and investigated for any criminal wrong doing they may have done.
They aren't doing for us, they are doing us!
What's up with this million dollar "discretionary" slush fund they have managed to award themselves on a regular basis?
RECEIVING UTILITY FEES $ FROM DWP IN TRADE FOR MORE RATE HIKES!!
Does it really require as many as 13 of these political cling-ons to accomplish the shameful mismanaging our city and taking our money as they do? They have us in their back pockets and we allow them to continue!

DraggingCanoe

Thomas Jefferson predicted this mess would happen. Read Jefferson The Virginian.

"They will bring with them the principles of the government they leave, imbibed in their early youth; In proportion to their numbers, they will share with us the legislation.

They will infuse into it their spirit, warp and bias its directions and render it a heterogeneous, incoherent, distracted mass.."

Obama and Holder's enemy is the White Christian male.

Free Thinker

With all the back polls in Los Angeles showing we should butt out of AZ's business.
With all the polls across the country, supporting AZ choice.

One would think the "leaders" would listen to what we want.

With what they show us time and time again, we need to show them with our vote, voting them out.

Roger

Just how stupid is this boycott? Our new AZ 1070 mirrors the Federal immigration laws. Concluding the local police depts cannot enforce an existing Federal law equates to concluding our local police should not enforce any federal laws. Bank robbery is a Federal crime, should only the F.B.I. be allowed to arrest Bank robbers? I think not. I'm sure the citizens of Los Angeles want the LAPD to arrest these criminals. If the F.B.I. refused to enforce federal laws regarding bank robbery would the people of Los Angeles not make the local police enforce these laws? The federal govt' has refused to enforce the federal laws regarding illegal immigration, so the state of Arizona should just allow ourselves to become the kidnapping capital of the world? We should just allow the drug dealers and MS13 to rule our streets? It is nice to know the L.A. City Council has solved all of the cities budget, crime, social services, other issues and has time for this feel good B.S. The city council should have read SB1070 and considered the impact Illegal immigration has had on California.

Dermot Whelan

LA TIMES NEEDS TO BE ON THE SIDE OF AMERICA WHICH HAS THE RIGHT TO MAINTAIN ITS BORDERS WITH ITS OWN TROOPS ON THE BORDER NOT FIGHTING FOR OIL WHERE THEY ARE NOT WANTED.

KPA

For this reason we choose to boycott the entire state of California. We will now enjoy our vacation time in Arizona. Illegal immigration and mismanagement of public funds has California broke. If you are too stupid to see that then I don't need to give my vacation dollars to your state or cities. CA and LA can go to hell.

DetectiveDick

So the Council listens to the SEIU, do you understand the meaning of the word ILLGAL? The US taxpayer is bailing out your State and others because Councils of Elected Officials only pander for re-election. I hope you are all voted out of Office and replaced by Representatives that understand the meaning of Illegal.

Emile

I will do everything in my power to avoid traveling to LA or investing a penny into a corrupt mismanaged city. LA is turning into a third world country (a la Mexico). LA is on the verge of bankruptcy and I just hope it comes sooner than later.

Taliesin

A couple of years ago, I took my wife on vacation to visit San Francisco. We drove down the magnificent Pacific Coast Highway to San Simeon and stopped at many points in between. We'd love to spend more vacations there, but we will NEVER return to California as long as this lunatic fringe is in power. We will boycott a state and cities that rewards hatred and intolerance with seats on the city council. California was once the Golden State, now it's in shambles because of four decades of this nonsense. Why the people of California continue to tolerate this fascism and idiocy in their midst is beyond me. So long, CA, I hardly new ya. Next time my wife and I are going to ARIZONA! You'd better watch your back. LA RAZA is coming for you. Fools.

tinkerthinker

As a business minded person, this action by LA city council gives pause for thought. It's painfully obvious that they either haven't read the bill or for some political reason passed this boycott of businesses, either way, what it says about doing business with LA speaks volumes. I am sure BUSINESSES will look for a more stable environment from now on.

Julial Woeltje

I really hope that this Newspaper (and hopefully therefore the city of LA) is reading these comments and paying attention to the poll results--EVIDENTLY once again the politicos feel they know what is better for the people they represent than what the people themselves want.

I hope you are WORRIED! I hope you are all voted out (or that the people who appoint you are voted out) next election.

SEAN

REMEMBER ALL THOSE WHO ARE IN OFFICE ON ELECTION DAY.LETS BUILD UP ENOUGH PEOPLE IN EVERY STATE AND ENCOURAGE THEM TO VOTE THESE BASTARDS OUT OF OFFICE THEY NEED TO GO...REMEMBER ON ELECTION DAY SPREAD THE WORD LETS MAKE A CAMPAIGN WITH ALL THE NAMES WHO WENT AGAINST SB 1070 VOTE THEM OUT...

Wendy

To Whom It May Concern, Any city or state boycotts Arizona over a law that has been on the Federal books for over 50 years is only showing how ignorant they are. Obviously, you have not read the law. Further, any city or state that encourages people to break ANY law is not a place I care to visit. Please remember that LEGAL Arizona citizens spend many thousands of dollars as tourists in California every year. I have now cancelled my July 4th, 4 room, 4 night stay in San Diego. I am encouraging my friends to boycott California.

Virginian

My husband has been offered a job in L.A., but we agree there is no way we would want our kids to grow up there, second class *citizens* to illegal aliens.

Not even to mention the fiscal disaster California's politicians and public employee unions have brought down upon the state. We love California, but you guys need some kind of intervention and a lengthy stint in rehab.

JS

So much for going to see my family this summer in LA. We'll be headed to Phoenix to meet up instead.
