The Marketplace section of today’s Wall Street Journal offered two headlines that provided a snapshot of the U.S. economy -- the sorry state of affairs today and the unsettling context. The centerpiece:

Caterpillar’s Job Cuts Hit 20,000In Dire Day for Layoffs, Equipment Maker Predicts Poor 2009 asConstruction Spending Continues to Sag

A box at the bottom of the piece referred readers to five other stories about layoffs and cutbacks at Philips Electronics, Home Depot, GM, Sprint and Texas Instruments. But just underneath the Caterpillar article was this headline:

McDonald’s to Expand,Posting Strong Results

Catepillar workers, the line for applications forms around the back.
