Sarah Palin's running mate holds his tongue

John McCain-Barack Obama debates presidential Sarah Palin That one Did John McCain really point to Sen. Barack Obama during the debate and call him "That one"?

Phew! It's starting to look like Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin don't just disagree with Obama's politics, they really loathe the man. I mean, that man. There's personal antagonism there. A Palin fan at a rally hurled racial slurs at black members of the media the other day, and the Secret Service is investigating allegations that a supporter called out "Kill him!" while Palin was speaking about the Obama-Ayers issue.

In response, to the ugliness and perceived threat to the Illinois senator, the McCain/Palin camp issued a strong condemnation that said... Oh right, they didn't.

Well, at least McCain controlled himself enough to keep from saying what he really meant: "That Muslim terrorist, liberal-commie-pinko, Viet Cong-loving, Iran appeasing, tax-and-spend, mulatto half breed, one."

Comments

How about Sandra Bernhard's rape comments or Peggy Noonan's 'kill Palin quick'? Where was your outrage when all those comments were made? Or are you just reporting 'injustice' about your Messiah?

Dmitriy, that doesn't make what McCain and Palin are doing any less true. You can't keep pointing at "Well, what about --" and not addressing the issue at hand. The issue is what is in the minds of people who are voting for thinly veiled racism, and what that means if it gets to be in control of this country. Do you have something to say about that?

Obama is the messiah. Don't forget it Russky.

It makes me laugh when I see Americans trying to deal with the issue of racism in their Republic. It is common knowledge amongst us the rest of the world that America is full of racists. It is clearly an issue that the USA is struggling with terribly during these final few weeks in the election run-in. If Obama wins, perhaps then America can actually start to change its ways, grow up, and learn to accept people, regardless of their ethnicity, religion, or economic standing.

Over the last 8 years America has become more and more distant from the rest of the world. At the same time, American politicians in power have become more and more arrogant and blood-thirsty. Look at J.McCain/S.Palin, for example, they have both been desensitized by the wars in the middle east etc enough to be able to talk about wars with Russia and the use of nuclear weapons, both taboo subjects since WW2, during casual conversation. I dare say that they actually believe that a full scale nuclear war with Russia is winnable. American politicians with attitudes like McCain and Palin, those fundamentalist, greedy, blood-thirsty, racists, who talk so flippantly about the lives of all of us Europeans, for it is us who will surely perish and suffer most if they have their way and go after Russia with nukes, are easily the scariest, most dangerous, people on this planet. Please America, don't vote for them again!

Peggy Noonan said no such thing. Miss Noonan is Republican speechwriter. Get your facts right.

The point, which you have missed Dmitriy, is that such HATE, should not be within the our Democratic Process. Hate for Hate's sake just doesn't work.

Dmitry,

Real smart. You actually think the threat made by some yahoo in a crowd during a spirited rally is the same as Republican pundit Peggy Noonan who was referring to what is obvious to all of us: Sarah Palin is a joke. And then you end by referring to Obama as a "messiah." What, a shade of racism in your comment? Next you'll be referring to Palin as "Hitler with Lipstick."

"Rape Her";" Kill him" "That one" are all UnAmerican and Dangerous.
Picture a presidential candidate as a terrorist which results in a supporter, ( most probably a citizen who truly love America) to shout "Kill Him"; And yet not warning him that he should not think or act in that manner. It is not different from what Bin Laden did. His speeches and teachings turned a lot of young Muslims around the world to hate America and cry "Death to America" whose actions resulted in misery loss of so many American lives. Besides, they are ending their lives thinking that they are doing a great sacrifice. Instigating violence is equivalent to committing violence.

Picture a Vice Presidential candidate as one to be raped by "my Black Brothers". Even if said for fun, it reveals the evil mind behind. It implies that women can be raped and “black brothers” are rapists

One presidential candidate calls the other “That One"! As if that candidate is a ‘thing’ less than human. McCain should search his soul and ask himself what made him to do that.
It is time for Americans to decide who stand as AMERCANS and who they should vote for

I agree that Sandra Bernhard's rape comment was totally out of line, and I am also surprised by the lack of outrage on Palin's behalf.

The context of the racial epithets and assassination threats are, however, quite different. They occurred in the presence Palin of and in response to her speech. In this context the McCain camp should denounce the comments.

It's funny. The GOP wanted the McCain came to unleash Palin. Look where that's going. Independents are turned off by the negativity while the worst part of the republican party is being energized (right wing "Christians", racists). I say unleash McCain. Let him speak to the public about who he is and what he has to offer. I thought his closing comments at last night's debate were incredibly touching. It made me want to have him serve my country as its president. I long to see more of this man and less of the attack dogs. But if the attack dogs continue to snap and snarl I will have to cast my vote for the more dignified candidate.

McCain chose Palin without proper vetting. It was reckless, impulsive and done in a moment of panic when he was faced with rising polls for Obama. Palin is a right-wing wack-job who has no business being on the National stage but She isn't the issue, it's the dangerous choice taken by this Oh So experienced Politician.

Now try to put fascist Moose-hunt Barbie back in her box and see what happens.

That Sandra Bernhard comment was actually a lie (not suprisingly) told by Matt Drudge... he took a comment that he heard her make and changed the verb from "chase" (as in, chase her out of N.Y.) to "rape". Look it up.

By Dmitriy: How about Sandra Bernhard's rape comments or Peggy Noonan's 'kill Palin quick'? Where was your outrage when all those comments were made? Or are you just reporting 'injustice' about your Messiah?

Dmitriy, you are a little bit scary. Jesus, whom Christians call the "Messiah" was actually killed.

That rally in Florida reminds me a little of the buildup to Krystalnacht or a lynch mob of gigantic proportions. Palin is no Christian; she is a bigoted farce and the quicker we get past her, the better.

It is sad, very sad, that Palin did not even address the "Kill Him" heckler, and stop the violence that is brewing at the rallies. She would love that to be the result, I am sure, and then when the old man collapses from not getting the proper rest, she will be the "head cheerleader". God help us all!

Why is it that most post favorable to Obama are printed and most favorable to McCain are not.

We are going to be here after the election dont you know

Re: Why is it that most post favorable to Obama are printed and most favorable to McCain are not.

If you're talking about comments, 99.5% of the ones that come in are, in fact, published. The ones that aren't are spiked because they include profanities or threats, or they're spam. If there's an imbalance in the comments, it's not because of anything we're doing as administrators of the site -- it's more a reflection of who's reading the blog.

If you're talking about the blog posts themselves, all I can say is that the blog reflects the interests of the folks who write it. Different members of the editorial board come from different backgrounds and have different points of view, politically and otherwise. We do the blog to give people a better insight into those points of view. I should also note that we don't all write about the presidential race, so you're not getting the full array of the board's views on that topic. But you're probably getting the most strongly held ones.

By the way, the blog also includes posts by Patt Morrison, a columnist here who's not a member of the editorial board. Technically speaking, she's on the Op-Ed side of the divide. The rest of us write the opinion pieces that appear, sans byline, on the left hand side of the split.

This article is ridiculous! Get a life people! There was NOTHING wrong with saying "that man." Stop manipulating things and playing the race card and focus on the issues!

How sad and pathetic some people are.....

You know, no matter who is put into office, that person has a lot of challenges facing them. First of all, George Bush, Jr. is a thug who took the white house just like you would expect a bully to do. Now he is leaving office after wrecking this country (he reminds me of a bad tenant who moves into a beautiful home only to leave behind a roach infested, holes in the wall, and unkept lawn of a mess when he leaves). In my opinion, John McCain is singing the same tune, just in a different key. He might not be as awful as Bush, but birds of a feather flock together.

Anyway, a side point that we all need to consider is who will run the country should the Commander in Chief perish? That's a very real possibility given the circumstances of the two presidential candidates. With Obama being Black, the chance for some right-wing assassination plot is very real. And with John McCain being close to the century mark, he could expire before this race is even over. So with that in mind, look at the Vice Presidential candidates. Biden or Palin? Well I can tell you this, if Palin gets a chance to run this country, then we are all in Big Trouble. She's like the female version of Bush - simple minded, goofy, and just doesn't look like a legitimate politician at all. Shoot, if she wins, we're better off giving the job to Tina Fey!

Oh well, just my humble thoughts. And who knows, if G. Bush Jr. could get elected, any body has a shot.

Couple of Comments: Of course all of this emotional nonsense is wrong and a bit silly. The comments and actions of McCain and Palin are clearly born of desparation. They want to win and currently the outlook is not great for their desired outcome. I've observed that adversity does not build character as much as it reveals it and what has been revealed regarding McCain and Palin is not pretty and a bit sad.

We require thoughtful, questioning and intelligent leadership, now more than ever. The last eight years of absolute certitude driven management has not worked out too well for us. I'd like to see us try something new.

UKblaza: I've lived all over the world (including the UK, where racisim is clearly demonstrated) and in my experience, racisim is fairly evenly distributed. Except for maybe Antartica. The penguins are tolerant, but we all behave better when we dress well.

I watched the whole debate last night but honestly missed that little quip. I didn't know of it until CNN replayed it. I don't even see it as a race thing--honestly. But it is derogatory and [should be] below the level of a person running for president. Consider this: During the post-debate news coverage (I watched on CNN), Paul Begala stated that a big reason for the dip in Gore's numbers after his debates, was due to his [Gore's] sighing and eye rolling during the debate. I see what Senator McCain saying last night in reference to Senator Obama as nearly the same thing. You can be on the same stage and disagree and you can be adamant about your position, but derogatory behavior / statements doesn't sit well with most people. It's going to ding Senator McCain.

Peggy Noonan never said that.

Also, Sarah Palin isn't a bad person. She's a good person. But since when are we a nation that settles? Would you settle for Sarah Palin as your NFL QB?

As a politician she is a talking points regurgitator. See if you can tell the difference between Palin and a machine: http://mypalininterview.com

The Obama campaign has been very skillful with innuendos and surrogates riling up the opposition and then Obama appears to remain above the fray. It's frustrating seeing the MSM and Obama supporters not recognizing that there is any connection between the strong emotions he provokes and so they attribute it all to racism. Makes sense doesn't it, all those racists out to get the anointed one.

But, Obama sure does look presidential so comments about McCain's look and age, or the dismissive or even threatening things said about Palin are just accepted as normal campaigning. It's enough to make this McCain supporter have angry thoughts about the smug one.

Funny how people hear what they want to hear. He said "that one," not "that man." One is more derogatory than the other.

Taken alone it might not make a difference. But coupled with his refusal to look at Obama in the first debate and the Palin attacks and her audience's reactions, it gets peoples' attention. Language matters. It has made a huge difference throughout our history. Republicans are arguing now that it does not ("verbage"), but notice how Palin changed Albright's words from "help" to "support," how she used the word "authored" instead of "wrote" regarding Obama's memoirs, how Bush always says the "Democrat Party" instead of the Democrats...of course it matters, of course it means something.

Racism is rarely explicit. Especially in this day and age, racists are careful to retain plausible deniability. So I'm not saying that McCain/Palin's comments are definitively racist, but they are incendiary, disrespectful, and open to debate.

For all you Obama lovers you need to Read the Bible the book of Revelations that is the last book in the Bible and chapter 13. then you can decide to be Obama lovers or to vote for the right man. Sandra Bernhard is a nobody she hasnt got the sense God gave a goose so dont let her comments bother you. Just know it is time to pray for our country and our world right now big time.

Daily Kos is the unofficial internet base for Barack Obama's movement, and like other Democratic leaders he makes a yearly pilgrimage to their convention. It is rare that anyone in the MSM takes note of the blatant hatred and outrageous slanders that characterize this venue, much less ask Obama to condemn them. In contrast, the media and the left-wing blogosphere (a distinction without a difference these days) are trying to hold the Republican candidates personally responsible for comments that someone shouted from the crowd at a rally. That seems like a double standard to me.
