The news that Clay Aiken has come out of the closet makes me wonder what the reaction might be among supporters of Proposition 8, which would limit marriage in California to the union between one man and one woman. It’s not just that Aiken is a born-again Christian whose core fan base overlaps with Prop. 8’s strongest supporters. It’s that Aiken has done the thing that seems to bother those supporters the most: he’s brought a child into the world through in vitro fertilization. Oh, the horrors.... The cover of the new People magazine, which comes out (so to speak) tomorrow, shows Aiken holding his newborn son Parker as he declares his sexual preference in GIANT BOLDFACE LETTERS -- an image that could cause head-spinning cognitive dissonance among (the few?) Aiken fans who didn’t already suspect his homosexuality. And yet, maybe there’s something for the Prop. 8 advocates to work with here. As People reported, Parker’s mom is Aiken’s best friend, music producer Jaymes Foster. So perhaps the Prop. 8 folks will get lucky and Aiken will offer to make her an honest woman before Nov. 4.

By the way, Prop. 8 looks like it needs all the help it can get. It hasn’t polled well, although supporters say that people may be reluctant to tell pollsters how they really feel about it. Then again, in this state, maybe they aren’t.
