In Tuesday's Letters to the Editor
On Tuesday, Detroit-area readers react to the Times' editorial "Not too big to fail," which argues against a bailout for Detroit's Big Three Automakers. Writes Bob Alexander, of Sterling Heights, Mich.:
The sniffing from the warmer parts of the country about the "Rust Belt" and the lousy cars Detroit produces is getting increasingly tiresome. If we continue down this road, the day will come when we find ourselves in a major war with an adventurous industrial nation who covets our land and resources and realizes we don't possess nearly enough manufacturing wherewithal to do anything about it.
Seeing how you sophisticated highbrow folks live on a coast, you'll probably have front row seats when the bad guys start coming ashore.
Take that, L.A.!
Catholics and choice, Martin Sheen, and the TSA, too.

Dear Sir,
It is time for us taxpayers to ask something in return from all these big companies that we are bailing out with our tax dollars. We would request Congress to write up a law that would require big companies to put a cap on all salaries of any employees not to surpass $1 million - make it retroactive to the day we bailed them out; also the time limit would be until they are back to making a profit.
If they complain that this is unconstitutional, then this law would protect the taxpayers from their getting more money from us and they can not borrow from the taxpayers if they do not agree to this. I would hope that a whole lot of taxpayers who feel the same as me will contact their congress men and women to help get such a law passed.
Respectfully,

No to Big Three is correct,no loans should be given.Much better would to take the tax dollars going for the solar/wind/ethanol fiasco and give them to The Big Three, after all,Detroit IS using a proven technology. And Detroit has always built what people want, large SAFE cars and trucks. Now that the public is being forced to buy smaller units,Detroit is ready with the best selling small SUV,Escape and the Focus. A win win stituation for the taxpayers all around!
