Jamiel Shaw open thread

March 12, 2008 | 10:13 am

Whatever you've got to say about the murder of 17-year-old Jamiel Shaw or the arrest of 19-year-old Pedro Espinoza for the crime, start your engines. Please keep it clean: no threats, bullying, bogarting or unamusing ad hominems will be accepted. I'll approve as fast as I can. Some scenes from Shaw's funeral may give the conversation a little focus.

It has now been discovered that Jamiel Shaw was either in a gang, or pretending to be in a gang, as depicted in photographs of him flashing the blood sign. Obviously his murder is a crime, and the murderer should be punished. Illegal immigrant criminals should be punished AND deported. However, I feel a bit manipulated as a citizen when this tragedy is used to push for a political agenda as if the victim played no role in the series of events. If you dress, talk and flash like a gang banger, you run the risk of getting shot and killed by other gang bangers. The decisions we make have consequences.

So saddening that legislators are taking a tragic occurance like the untimely death of Jamiel Shaw and expoiting it to fit into their own political agenda. Theoretically I could claim that I've noticed that people from the State of Kansas have been murdering Californians "at an alarming rate" and if we deport all people from Kansas we could save lives. The fact that he was Illegal has absolutely nothing to do with the sad reality that he took another life. Does anyone see that this isn't solving the problem? It's not where this boy (and he is still a boy, only 19, regardless if he's considered a legal adult) was born, but couldn't we instead shift the focus to a horribly corrupt prison system that couldn't care less about rehabilitating inmates. Was maybe the fact that he had just gotten out of prison and was known to be a dangerous individual and WAS NOT put into any sort of post prison program at least partly responsible for this tragedy?

Is the problem that he was illegal? Or instead maybe that he was a misguided, disenfranchised HUMAN BEING? Please don't turn this into an issue that it's not. We have pleanty of full blooded, corn fed, good ol' Americans who commit deplorable crimes like this every day. It's tragic and it's not right to expolit it with personal poilitical agenda.

Bobby Shaw, Bobby Shaw! What do you mean that Jamiel wasn't killed by an illegal immigrant? Have you not followed this story? I too am black, am outraged, am mad as hell. This should never have happened. If the police could have done their job, the Shaws would not be minus a son. Sure, their son was killed by a gang member, a gang member who is here illegally. I plan to be in court with the Shaws to give them my support. Have you heard that they had to have the DA fired because she was more concerned with special order 40 then prosecuting this murderer? Keep up with the case so that you can be informed with what is going on with this family. Now you go and CHECK THE FACTS! Jamiels Law.com

All of you guys need to check your racist cards at the door! I am too an African American leaving in S. LA; but i am not going to go after all the Hispanics in LA...Jamiel Shaw was not killed by an illega immigrant he was killed by a gang member! All gang members should be dealt with to the fullest extent of the LAW... But don't go after all Hispanics, that's just using a scapegoat...And illegal immigrants don't qualify for public assistance, SO CHECK YOUR FACTS!!

Dear Mayor, and Council Members:

I need an education by blacks in regard to the following article:

What’s One Life Worth When It Comes to the Politics of Immigration (Jamiel Shaw)?

this is a very important political article...it asks the question, where is the black outrage at the death of Jamiel Shaw, in the perspective of illegal immigration.

Blacks need to educate us on this. I don't at all understand why blacks are not outraged at illegal immigrants invading our country, as most of the rest of us are. After all, if any race suffers as a result of this invasion; is it not the blacks?; not only in job loss, but there is only so much money available for assistance to the poor, and impoverished, among us, and the illegal immigrants have their talons deep into that money, even though they are supposed to be inelgible for it.

The article:

Nothing illustrates the all-consuming desire of the segment of the political left that seeks to transform America through immigration than the reaction, of lack thereof, to the murder of Jamiel Shaw Jr. While people like Rodney King and Tawana Brawley have had their moments in the national spotlight for being victims of real and imagined crimes, few outside of Jamiel’s hometown of Los Angeles have ever heard of him.

A very concerned citizen

L.A. , stop putting up with this stuff. No more deaths by illegal aliens! Demand accountability and help the Shaws make something meaningful out of all this. The next victim could be your own family member. This young football player--it's just tragic what happened to him. NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED. TAKE BACK YOUR CITY, L.A.! Stop letting the inmates run the asylum ! NOW!

8.

The Shaw family should demand some sort of evidence that Special Order 40 is saving lives. The Council claims that this order allows illegal witnesses to come forward without fear of deportation-how many illegal witnesses have come forward and saved lives? We know of at least one death linked to Special Order 40. Must we have more? Time for some accountability!

9.

The City Attorney needs to campaign for Jamiel's law and speak up for legal citizens who deserve not to be killed by people who shouldn't even be here. This is a no-brainer.

10.

the prayer's of the descendants of lane and margaret
shaw are with the entire family.

Here's the deal. Nobody is to blame except for the philandering Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. He has allowed Los Angeles to become Tijuana North and has declared Los Angeles a sanctuary city. The Mayor needs to be held responsible and he needs to be run, not walk, run out of office for making poor decisions that now put every Angelino in danger. It is disgusting that Pedro Espinoza was a known gang member, and had been arrested numerous times. What is this city, I mean ciudad, doing? Everyone that is in an elected position and had any contact with the release of Espinoza needs to resign today. That should start with the Mayor who is too worried about his love life to care about Los Angeles.
