After early morning worries that enough marchers wouldn’t show up, the May 1 protest is going sort-of strong in downtown Los Angeles, with about 25,000 participants, according to police estimates. Here are some blogger reactions.

Dave Bullock, also known as eecue, has photos on blogging.la and on his personal site, including some nice perspectives of a mass of marchers on Broadway. On L.A. Voice, Ryan Knoll didn’t see too much in an early pass through downtown. L.A.comfidential also notes the smaller-than-expected turnout, suggesting that maybe the kids decided to stay in school (or were forced to stay). And it isn’t just the kids sitting out -- as Mayor Sam points out, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is elsewhere. Marc Cooper offers still more explanations on the turnout, noting that more mainstream groups opted to sit out this protest:

Many of the marches tomorrow are organized by more fringy groups that -- against the wishes of the more effective mainstream coalitions -- call for an economic boycott. That’s an idea that might appeal more to Anglo cheerleaders on the side than it does to most Latino families. The latter seek more integration into the economy -- not less. And they also face the possible reprisals for not showing up for work.

And for immigration-unrelated May 1 notes, Reason’s Hit and Run and the Volokh Conspiracy remember that the day used to be about workers, then about glorifying communism. They forgot to note that it’s also about glorifying jeans (through volunteerism, of course).
