CNET reported today that Left Behind Games, a Christian video game company, has expanded to the world of social networking. DreamWebSpace claims to have ‘language filtering, more security and live monitoring.’ Given complaints about MySpace content (and MySpace’s limited attempts to filter or censor it), the effort seems like a good idea, particularly for would-be social networkers who are under 14, MySpace’s minimum age requirement.

But as CNET noted in an earlier piece, Left Behind Games is no stranger to inappropriate content. According to the company’s website, players of the game ‘Left Behind: Eternal Forces’ battle and kill non-Christians who are fighting for the Anti-Christ, ‘an imposturous one world government seeking peace for all of mankind.’ (Heathens can choose to play on the Anti-Christ’s side.) Joel Stein opined about the game in a May 16 Times column: ‘Human history, to [Christian fundamentalists], really is a video game with a wildly action-packed third act and the happiest ending imaginable. It’s a beautiful thought, even when you’re shooting nurses and blowing up U.N. peacekeeping helicopters.’
